Föreningen Nynäshamns Järnvägsmuseum, NJM (The Nynäshamn Railway Museum Association), has the aim to preserve and restore the locomotive roundhouse in Nynäsgard, Nynäshamn Sweden, to its origin. The goal is to make a living railway- and working life museum dedicated to the Nynäs Line history. At the roundhouse, NJM is restoring and showing its collection of old railway vehicles. NJM also arranges excursions with steam locomotive trains.
3 660  3 Stockholm
1320   Stockholm Built across 14 islands linked by 50 bridges, Stockholm enjoys an excellent natural setting. The atmospheric alleyways of Gamla Stan, site of the 14th-century Storkyrkan (Great Church) and the majestic Royal Palace, attest to Sweden's medieval greatness. Important museums lie on the adjacent island of Skeppsholmen, while the extraordinary Vasa Museum, displaying a 17th-century warship, is just one attraction located near Djurgarden, an immensely popular park. City Hall is Stockholm's major 20th-century building and site of the Nobel Prize banquet. The abundant waterways can be enjoyed on a boat trip to the splendid outlying royal palace of Drottningholm.

1467   Strömsholm Castle On a small island in the River Kolbäcksan, a somewhat Italianate stronghold, Strömsholm Castle (Strömsholms slott), surveys the lazy traffic of boats up and down the Strömsholm Canal. Although it remains a royal castle, Strömsholm has been placed under the care of Sweden's National Horse Sports Association. Within is an acclaimed collection of old equestrian paintings. Horse-riding and jumping contests are regularly held here, amid the beautiful park and its surroundings. On a number of Thursday evenings from mid-June to mid-August, classical music concerts are held at the castle.
6 891 5 Örebro
1551   Örebro Castle (Örebro slott) is one of the finest examples of that combination of fortress and king's governor's residence so typical of Sweden. This imposing four-towered stronghold is situated on a small island in the River Svartan, in the heart of Örebro. Although it dates from the 13th century, the castle has been enlarged and restored several times. Parts of it are still in use as provincial administrative offices. Also housed here is the historical museum of the Närke region.
7 1073 6 Falun
1733   Copper has been mined in Falun for around 1,000 years, and two thirds of the world's copper ore was produced here during the 17th and 18th centuries. One of the town's highlights is Falun Copper Mine and museum (Stora Museet) and its awesome Big Pit (Stora Stöten), measuring 100 metres (328 feet) deep and 400 metres (1,310 feet) wide; the crater was created when the roof fell in on a huge network of underground copper workings in 1687. Folk art, costume, and music are the subject of Falun's Dalarnas Museum, and the town's streets buzz with live music from around the world during the International Folk Music Festival in mid-July.
This copper mine (Falu koppargruva) is older than the kingdom of Sweden. Copper was being mined here as long ago as the Viking era. The oldest document about the mine, dating from 1288, shows that it was then owned by a company, Stora Kopparberg, in which shares could be bought and sold. Nowadays, known simply as “Stora,” it is the world's oldest company of shareholders. In the 17th century it was the largest copper-producer in the world, but nowadays the company's interests lie mainly in the ownership of forests and the production of timber.
8 1166  6 Gävle
1826   Gävle Swedish Railway Museum One of the worlds' finest railway collections, the Swedish Railway Museum (Sveriges Järnvägsmuseum) was founded as long ago as 1915. Documenting over a hundred years of Swedish railway history, it ranges from the ultimate luxury of the royal family's private coaches to the stark conditions of a prisoner transportation van. The Swedish State Railways (SJ) system was electrified very early, and the collection of electrically powered locomotives is outstanding.
9 2259  6 Kiruna
2919    Kiirunavaara Gruva As early as 1698 it was known that the mountain of Kiirunavaara contained vast quantities of iron ore. But it was not possible to mine it until Riksgränsbanan, the railway crossing the Norwegian border to the harbour of Narvik, was completed in 1902. Kiirunavaara holds the world's largest known single concentration of iron ore: 4 kilometres (2.5 miles) long, 2 kilometres (1.25 miles) wide, and 80 metres (262 feet) deep. Guided tours by coach thread their way through the underground road network.

3253   Kautokeino Museum and Cultural Centre The small town of Kautokeino has become a centre for Sami culture. It has the only Sami theatre in Norway, which incorporates the Nordic Sami Research Centre. The theatre won an architectural prize in 1987 and is used for concerts and exhibitions. An open-air museum, consisting of a collection of old buildings, shows aspects of Sami life and culture.
Alta Rock Carvings and Museum Ancient peoples lived all over northern Norway from prehistoric times, leaving many traces of their lives. The Alta Rock Carvings (Helleristningene) surrounding Alta Museum are among the best, and range in age from 2,000 to 6,000 years. Some of the carvings depict a story, showing people in processions, dancing, and making music, many of them in skin boats. The excellent museum explains the carvings; there are also exhibitions on the Alta area, past and present.
12 2720 9 Alta
3380   Alta situated in the extreme north of Norway and formerly inhabited by the Finnish and Sami people, Alta was largely destroyed during World War II, but its major historical site, the rock carvings at Hjemmeluft, remains intact. These are the most extensive prehistoric rock carvings in northern Europe, taking the form of stylised people, animals, and boats, and they are thought to have been created between 2,500 and 6,000 years ago. Guided tours of the caves are given during the summer months, and a museum here also provides extensive background information about the origins of the carvings. Alta's stated population of some 15,000 is in fact the sum total of a number of scattered settlements in the vicinity.

3586   Nordkapp is Europe's northernmost headland 307 metres (1,007 feet) high. Monuments on the promontory include The Children of the Earth, constructed by seven children from seven lands. The North Cape Hall has a cave forming a 300-seat amphitheatre, its wide window looking out over the Arctic Ocean, a chapel, and tableaux showing significant events at North Cape.

The famous North Cape (Nordkapp) of Norway. Located on Mageroy (Meager) Island, the Cape was named in 1553 by the storm-swept English sea Captain, Richard Chancellor. This geographical tip is commonly referred to as the northernmost point of Europe and has been a popular attraction for Kings and Nobles.

You'll tour the North Cape Hall, a unique structure which has been carved out of the cliffs and contains four levels of tunnels and caverns. Here you'll have the opportunity to learn about the history of this location from the many exhibits lining the walls. The hall also holds a cinema with a 225' screen, where you'll enjoy a 30-minute video program about the Cape and the island.

After the presentation, you'll have an hour on your own to explore the facilities of the hall. A curio shop and cafeteria are housed here as well as a Post Office, where philatelists will want to capture the much sought-after postmark of the Cape. There is also a large picture window built into the cliffs, which provides a fantastic view of the Arctic conditions outside. If you prefer, you may take a stroll outside to enjoy the view from the cliff face.

You'll stop...
For photographs at an observation point (weather and time permitting) as you make your ascent of the North Cape Plateau. You'll see cliffs rising over the Arctic Ocean and the "Horn".

You'll pass...
Through wild, desolate terrain on your 45-minute drive and experience one of the few places on the mainland where the landscape and flora reveal a distinct arctic character. Here, the tundra is dotted with small lakes, and reindeer graze on the island.
